Actually there is a very direct answer to the bulk of the questions and concerns people raise here, the problem is getting more people to hear it and practice it. Yet there is great freedom and power over your own life once you embrace it.

This has been around for quite some time and every once in a while I find I have to remind people it exists. The website is useful, the PBS show/tape even more so for many.

The biggest point for many is: The POWER is YOURS.

affluenza.org/

Af-flu-en-za n. 1. The bloated, sluggish and unfulfilled feeling that results from efforts to keep up with the Joneses. 2. An epidemic of stress, overwork, waste and indebtedness caused by dogged pursuit of the American Dream. 3. An unsustainable addiction to economic growth.

This is so important I think I will post it as a separate thread and in other related tribes.
  • its a great link, thank you for posting it. Should be regular reading for everyone, as there is so much info to learn from it!

&&&I would like to add here a reply I posted to the same post, as it is more appropriate here in the voluntary simplicity tribe, - so sorry if you get to see it twice!&&& :

On a positive note I can report that I have last month been able to fulfill a life time dream, and have moved into a little house that is heated with a wood stove, and is listed as a national heritage site, as a "selbstversorger-siedlung", which would be translated to "selfsufficiency-settlement".

I am now experiencing first hand how much I have forgotten about recycling, saving, selfsufficiency.. My learning curve is high at the moment, and I am enjoying every minute of it.
I have land to grow what I wish, and could keep animals or the like. the options are myriad, and the choices a little overwhelming at this point..

My children too are learning now, before they step out into (Swiss) society, similarly consumerist as USA, although perhaps more environmentally concious.. to save, conserve, re-use, recycle and basically think twice ot three times before getting a thing or then having to dispose/reuse etc..

Its a small step for me, but an even smaller step for mankind.. (?)
    ; )

wish me luck guys, and keep teaching me! . I'll be reading your posts and growing as a person..
